Achini Wijesinghe

“Emerge is the shining light at the end of the tunnel.”

Achini says her one true love is social work. Her passion for social work was fueled by her first position as an intern at the Child Protection Authority of Sri Lanka. Prior to coming to Emerge, Achini worked at the United Nations Sri Lanka as a programmes officer on gender issues. Recently, Achini has worked in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Women – to establish a national referral system for survivors of gender-based violence. This effort involved the rationalization and coordination of the highly fragmented current organizational system. Achini has also worked at the Independence Center in the United States focused on improving access of people with disabilities to public transportation in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado. She is currently reading for a Master’s in Sociology at the University of Colombo. Achini says she feels right at home at Emerge because its model aligns perfectly with her passion and skills. In her free time, Achini likes to practice yoga and take photographs.
