Emerge Sale in Michigan!

There will be an Emerge sale this Sunday, January 31st, after each service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lansing in East Lansing, Michigan. The Unitarian Church, with its emphasis on social justice and equality, is excited to hold an Emerge sale to help the girls in Sri Lanka. The Emerge sale will be run by Ann Sojka, who has participated and volunteered in various Emerge functions since 2008. She is currently an Urban Planning Junior at Michigan State University, and after she graduates she plans to pursue a career in Transportation Planning. Her activities include the Women's Glee Club, NSCS and the Honors College.

Ann heard about Emerge from her sister Ellen (aka me), who has been very involved in the non-profit over the last several years. Ann was touched by the stories of the girls from Sri Lanka, and decided to do something to help. She has participated in Emerge events, assisting her sister in selling jewelry, taking photographs, and spreading the word.

Sell Baby, Sell

Since coming back to the USA in October, I've been focused on Emerge jewelry sales in addition to coordinating Emerge's US team. I love selling Emerge jewelry. It's incredibly rewarding to speak to customers and spread the story of how and why our jewelry was created, and every product we sell reminds me of one of our beautiful and persevering young girls in Sri Lanka.

This holiday season we've implemented a sales strategy that relies on several different sales outlets. The first is campus sales, Emerge's hallmark method of both selling jewelry and spreading awareness. The MIT Emerge Holiday Sale (this year December 2nd through 4th) has become expected by our MIT and Boston community of supporters. We're hoping to replicate our success in Boston at three other college campuses: University of North Carolina, Indiana University, and Michigan State University.

Our second method is through Emerge Agents - supporters who organize and sell Emerge jewelry on our behalf while simultaneously educating their communities about violence against women and what Emerge Global is doing to combat this. Modeled off of Mary Kay, Emerge Agents will be a key sales outlet for Emerge moving forward. This holiday season our first four agents, Katie Gary, Shantal De Silva, Eva Enns, and Nellum Lewis, will be piloting the program, and I can't wait to see how the sales go! If you're interested in becoming an Emerge Agent, please email me at ellen@emergeglobal.org.

The third way we're selling jewelry this holiday season is through event sales. Emerge has been invited to the Fair Trade Holiday Sale at Boston College, Helen Holiday Hoopla in West Lafayette, and has already participated in Shecky's Boston Girls Night Out (pictured below). To read more about our incredibly successful Shecky's sale, where we sold nearly $2000 worth of jewelry, click here.

And finally, online sales! Products have been flying off the (virtual) shelves at the Emerge Global Etsy Store, and in anticipation for the holiday season we will be posting over 70 new pieces so check back soon! With so many opportunities to buy Emerge jewelry this holiday season, there's really no excuse not to. By attending one of our sales or purchasing online, you're not only receiving a beautiful and unique gift, but are also playing a key role in the growth and expansion of Emerge Global. Thank you in advance!

Fair Trade Boston

Yesterday, I spent the day selling Emerge jewelry at the first annual Fair Trade Boston event, hosted at the Artists For Humanity epicenter near Boston's waterfront. The event was packed with live music, tasty eats, and beautiful handmade crafts from around the world. It was great to meet like-minded individuals and organizations, and to draw inspiration from their stories and ideas.

I found myself most excited about the fair trade fashion show in the middle of the day, primarily because one of the models wore Emerge jewelry with her outfit and I knew how excited our girls would be to see their jewelry being modeled for an audience! I did my best to capture it with the video function on my less-than-optimal digital camera.

Yeah, I know, it's hard to see the jewelry. But, trust me, she's wearing it!

A big thank you to all the folks who helped out, including Danielle Holly, for making it possible for us to have a booth at Fair Trade Boston, and our wonderful Emerginistas-for-the-day who helped run our sales, including: Sally Susnowitz (Director of MIT's Public Service Center), Angelica Weiner, and April Wachtel.

Emerge Featured in Edwards Angell Palmer and Dodge's Spring Soiree

Emerge Global with part of our dedicated legal team
From right to left: Alia Whitney-Johnson, Katie Galbraith, Akiyo Fujii, Betsy Munnell, and April Wachtel

It's not every day that a non-profit of our size secures a dedicated team of probono lawyers to help navigate the legal landscape surrounding international non-profits. And, it's certainly not every day that a group of powerhouse attorneys organizes a women's networking event! A little over a year ago, Emerge Global was extremely fortunate to develop a relationship with Edwards Angell Palmer and Dodge. This May, the Women's Initiative of EAPD hosted a Spring Soiree for a dynamic group of women in the Boston area. We were lucky to be one of their featured 5 probono clients. Other featured probono clients included: Raising the Blues, Ltd., Adopt-A-Pig, America SCORES New England, and Transcultural Exchange.

More than 100 women gathered to mingle, indulge in wonderful appetizers, and learn about the work of the five featured non-profits. I'm proud to say that the girl's jewelry was definitely a huge hit. We sold more than $1000 in just over two hours. And, these women proved that Emerge jewelry can look great dressed up or down. They found pieces for their suits, dresses, and casuals. It was great to have April back from Sri Lanka to tell our story, share her experiences, and help with the non-stop buzz around our booth.

So, what could a huge law firm like Edwards Angell Palmer and Dodge do for a small organization like Emerge Global, you might ask. Well, they have helped us with everything from filing our 1023 so that we could become our own non-profit (woohoo! Thank you EAPD!), to helping us set up a sister entity in Sri Lanka, to trademarking our logo, to developing volunteer waivers and non-disclosure agreements. (And yes, that's just part of all they have done). It's been a long year of paperwork but, thanks to EAPD, we are building the infrastructure to have long-term global impact. A huge thank you to all the members on our legal team- David Mason, Akiyo Fujii, Katie Galbraith, Patrick Concannon, Mary De la Rosa, Betsy Munnell, and the rest of the EAPD crew- for helping us to get to where we are today!

Fundraiser in Houston: Building the Emerge Global Community

After nearly missing my connecting flight from Chicago to Houston due to engine trouble back in Boston, I arrived at the Houston airport just before midnight, greeted by the enthusiastic smiles of Medha Karve and Madhavi Padval, two long-term supporters of Emerge. They eagerly asked me for the latest updates on Emerge in the car, excited about the event that would be hosted the following day at the Karve home.

On Friday, August 29th, I woke up eager begin setting up for the event. I was surprised to be greeted by lush green scenery just outside my window... not at all what I had expected from my first trip to Texas!

I cannot begin to describe the Karve's home. It is by far the most exquisite space within which I have had the privilege of presenting. The cherry wood was soft and inviting and the seemingly endless counters, shelves, and glass tables were perfect to display the Emerge jewelry while encouraging guests to mingle and move around the space.

We began the night with a short video on Emerge and a presentation, both on how Emerge began and where it is going. I scattered stories throughout the presentation to show not only what we do as an organization but why we do it and what motivates me as an individual.

In particular, I focused on the need for a new facility for young girls who have survived rape, as well as a meaningful living, learning and working environment for those young women who can no longer be housed at Ma-Sevana, due to the fact that they are over 18. And, our most exciting update was that Ellen, who is leading our incredible team to Sri Lanka this year, had arrived in Sri Lanka earlier that night! To follow Ellen and the team's progress, check out our field blog: http://emergeglobal.org/fieldblog/

I was impressed by the knowledge of my audience. I have never received so many great questions, everything from how we know where the mon
ey goes in Sri Lanka to how the legal system works, who are partners are, and why rape and incest are especially prevalent in Sri Lankan culture.

What was intended to be an event from 5:30-7:30pm lasted until 10:30pm, as people laughed and cried, met one another, ate wonderful food, and carefully selected and purchased the precious jewelry creations of Emerge participants to share with their loved ones.

We nearly sold all of our jewelry (about $800 worth) and raised $700 at the event itself. More importantly, we expanded our community within Texas. I knew the event had been a success when many people told me they would bring 5-10 friends the next time I visited. As we share our evolving story, our Emerge community is growing as well. And, I couldn't be more excited about this growth!

Thank you...

A huge thank you to the following individuals and groups who made this event possible:

The Karve Family-
  • to Medha, for hosting this beautiful event in your home and for making your home mine for the weekend
  • to Jusleen, for tirelessly coordinating all the event details and for being the wonderful friend that you are
  • to Jai, for spending all of Friday trying to connect my computer to your TV!
Stacey Nakamura and the MIT Club of Houston- for enthusiastically incorporating the event in announcements to MIT alums and parents, for sending out additional invitations, and for photographing the event

Madhavi Padval- for working the donation and sales table at the event (and showcasing Emerge jewelry quite fashionably all night long!)

"To Dine For" Catering
- for the exquisite drinks and Hors d'oeuvre's

Jusleen Karve- Finally, while I've already thanked her above, I want to send an extra big thank you to Jusleen, who has not only been one of my best friends, but who has worked as our fundraising manager over the past year, pouring countless hours and energy into Emerge to help make our programs possible. Jusleen graduated from MIT this past June and is now working at MODEC International in Houston. Good luck Jusleen with all your endeavors! You'll always be a part of the Emerge family...
