Ellen (Sojka) Needham has been involved with Emerge since her senior year at MIT when she was inspired by both Emerge’s mission and the dedicated team working to realize it. After graduation, Ellen moved to Sri Lanka as Emerge Global’s first Sri Lanka Country Director, where she established the Emerge Lanka Foundation, Emerge Global’s sister entity. In the fall of 2009, she moved back to Boston as Emerge’s U.S. Director and spent the next year focusing on sales, marketing, and staff and volunteer development. She now serves on the board of Emerge Lanka Foundation, helping to provide strategic advice while continuing to pursue her passion for global social impact.
Ellen currently works at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), a leading global education company based in Boston, MA. She has filled several roles at HMH, including Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility, Program Director for Services Innovation, and most recently Business Director for the company’s newly-formed Services Group. Through her efforts, she supports a business of hundreds of employees and contractors to deliver best-in-class professional development and support services to educators around the world.
Ellen graduated from MIT in 2008 with a BS in Chemical Engineering and minors in Management and Chemistry. In her spare time she enjoys coaching volleyball, running, and spending time with her husband and dog.
