Partnering with Shelters to Maximize Impact

Emerge Lanka operates its programs through existing shelters. This enables us to enhance services provided, identify opportunities to increase the capacity of these shelters, and connect shelters to more resources (such as donations and free services). It also enables Emerge Lanka to develop a strong network of support for its participants across Sri Lanka. Through strong partnerships, we will minimize the cost involved and maximize long-term impact. We currently run our programs in 3 shelters, run by two different partners: the Salvation Army Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan Government.

The Department of Probation and Child Care Services:

The Sri Lankan Department of Probation and Child Care Services operates with the mission to provide equal opportunities for all orphan, abandoned and destitute children and other children in conflict with the law while promoting and preserving their rights in keeping with National Policies and International Standards for children. Emerge currently works with girls in two homes run by this department: the National Training and Counseling Centre (“NTCC”), located in Panadura, Sri Lanka and the Ranmuthugala Girls’ Home, located in Ranmuthugala, Sri Lanka.

The Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army is a well-respected NGO in Sri Lanka that provides a variety of services. We support girls in their home called “The Haven.”  The institution was first commenced as a ‘Rescue Home’ for women in 1924. This institution caters to young girls sent from courts for various minor offenses, others who have been harassed as domestics, and those that have been sexually/physically abused. In addition to the girls that we work with, a second part of the home (the “Sunshine House”) supports young girls and children who are destitute there are others sent from the police/government authorities knowing fully well that the Salvation Army does its best to look after those under their care.

Partnering with Local Service Providers

  • Samuthanna- provides training in measuring emotional well-being, basic counseling techniques, and the Tree of Life therapy model

Additionally, we provide a number of referrals of program alumnae to various job opportunities and service providers, depending on their individual needs.
