Melani*
If I had to describe myself in three words, I would say: slim, sensitive and active. Family is the most important thing to me in the world and I am happiest when I am with them and my daughter, who is the joy and hope that makes everything worthwhile.
I learnt a lot of skills in the Emerge Bead Programme, including jewellery-making techniques, choosing colours that matched, and even designing my own piece. Every Monday, we were waiting for Emerge with a heart full of happiness. I learnt how to make a budget before you go to the store to purchase beads. Thereafter I learnt how I would sell my product and receive a check to be deposited to my bank account. At the end of my stay at the shelter, I learnt how much had been accumulated in my bank account.
This money I earned form Emerge have contributed to building my house. This money will be reimbursed to me as my family is involved in a housing project spearheaded by the Government. When I get my money back I hope to re-save it for the future of my family. If I could change one thing in Sri Lanka it would be the use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
